Moving to his own flow
Meet Rick Suvanto:
Rick Suvanto, a husband and father of three from Toronto, was diagnosed with Parkinson's at 57. Rick’s early symptoms included loss of taste and smell, depression, and increased fatigue after running. Despite these challenges, Rick remains a passionate advocate for Parkinson's awareness, often wearing his #ParkinsonsLooksLikeMe shirt to raise visibility.
For Rick, it's so important to be yourself, be seen, and embrace who you are. He advocates for more awareness, stating, "The more Parkinson’s is understood, the more people can feel good about being out there. It’s so much worse if you’re stuck at home without support. I like the idea of ‘swagger’ because it’s about just being yourself, being visible, and making noise!"
Rick emphasizes the importance of treatment, exercise, and social connection. He co-captains the Rigid Riders, a cycling group for people with Parkinson's, finding joy and camaraderie in their weekly rides. "Parkinson’s has expanded my life and gives me purpose," he shares.
Rick's advice to those newly diagnosed is to join support groups, stay active, and connect with others. "Don't stay inside and feel alone," he urges. By proudly sharing his journey and maintaining an active lifestyle, Rick is proving that Parkinson's does not define him.
